In an action that could cost the French club dearly, PSG was wronged by the penalty that Messi failed to score, as his shot was impressively saved by Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid's most outstanding player so far.

It was in the second half of the match when the referee decreed a penalty due to a foul committed in the 60th minute when Dani Carbajal brought down Kylian Mbappé.

At that point, the referee reviewed the play with VAR only as a formality, but the penalty was already decreed and the one chosen for the shot was none other than Lionel Messi.

Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid's hero

Lionel Messi positioned himself in the penalty area, took his time, and took the shot, one that was launched to the right however, Courtois guessed where the Argentine star's shot was going to be launched and dived to that side.

In this way, Courtois was the hero for Real Madrid, a team that went on the defensive and waited for counterattacking opportunities to try to score against a PSG that had them under attack all the time.

Messi adds one more penalty miss to his career

According to information from Marca, Lionel Messi has so far missed 5 penalty kicks in his career in Champions League matches.

So far and in his entire club career, Messi has scored 50 goals from penalty kicks, and has missed only 26, which is an astonishing number for a player of the Argentinean star's stature.

Fortunately for Lionel Messi, Kyian Mbappé scored to make the score 1-0, meaning PSG will go into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu without the burden of having missed such a vital penalty kick.
