Steve Bruce's side were looking forward to a celebratory match after the much celebrated £300m takeover and tried their best to win the match but the atmosphere was made more tense after a fan collapsed just minutes into the game.
Spurs full-back Reguilon was seen alerting referee Andre Marriner to a situation in the ground's East Stand in the 40th minute of the game. A fan has collapsed and needs medical attention. Eric Dier and Oliver Skipp went over to the dugout to request medical assistance and a team doctor with a defibrillator ran across the pitch to attend to the fan. Marriner paused play and instructed the players to leave the pitch. Both sides later returned to the pitch to complete the rest of the first half with Tottenham going on to win 2-3.
Sergio Regullion was praised for his actions , and said the win mattered little, that the health of the fan is more important. "I think three points is always a moment of happiness but, for me, what's more important is the guy, they are telling me he is okay and stable," he told Match of the Day. "I saw the fans waving and I saw a guy lying down. I saw something wrong had happened. I looked at the referee and he stopped the match. I think now everything is okay and 100 percent happiness. "It was very strange, we went to the dressing room and I was looking at the man lying down, I was nervous because I don't like to watch that."
Harry Kane, who got his first goal of the season at St James's Park thanks the fans who did CPR and the medical team for their swift action. Even though the Magpies couldn't save the day, the greater disaster was averted.
