Messi stands and threatens to leave: how much does FC Barcelona want to get from him in a salary cut
The Spanish club is reducing their players' salary and Messi could leave if they do so with his.
FC Barcelona is going through a terrible financial crisis and is looking forward to different ways to solve it. After the departure of Josep María Bartomeu, the club will have to choose a new president who will make a plan to recover from this delicate situation that started many years ago.
First, Barcelona’s sport advisers considered that the players' salary, as the ones of every employee from the club, must be reduced. Players such as Sergio Busquets, Gerard Piqué and Marc-André ter Stegen acceded to earn less money in order to help the club to recover from the crisis.
Lionel Messi should then also reduce his salary, but he seems not to have that in his plans. The Argentinian legend aged 33 has a contract that will end on June 2021 and doesn’t know yet if he is going to renew it, as during the last transfer window he said Bartomeu that he wanted to leave.
The strategy of reducing the salary won’t be pleasant for Messi, who may consider that it is the final move from the club to invite him to leave. The attacker has been playing during 20 years for Barça, since he joined La Masía as a youth. After this time, he may be leaving now and Manchester City is the team where he could continue his career.
