2020/21 English Premier League champions, Manchester City will go at it again this season, trying to win their 4th league title in 5 years. Only Liverpool (2019/20) has been able to break the stranglehold that Pep Guardiola and his team has had on the English domestic league. In the 2017/18 and the 2018/19 seasons that they won the trophy, they did so in record-breaking fashion, shattering many records (goals, wins, points) along their way to the summit of the League. After reclaiming the title from Liverpool last season, the Citizens will hope to win it again to make it 4 out of 5.
Central to Manchester City's recent domination of the English Premier League is the calibre of players that the club has at its disposal. In a world-class manager such as Pep Guardiola, City has the perfect man to build and improve players capable of great things. In the past, players such as Vincent Kompany, David Silva, and Sergio Aguero have called the Etihad home. Now, Kevin de Bruyne leads the charge while English record signing, Jack Grealish has made an immediate impact. Below is the full list/roster of players at Manchester City for the 2021/22 season.
In the high-pressing system that Pep Guardiola employs, the goalkeeper is the first line of the press. Thus, the impact of Ederson cannot be understated in the Manchester City squad. The Brazilian No 1 will retain his place in between the sticks for City. He is ably deputised by American shot-stopper, Zack Steffen. The 26-year-old American had a breakout season last year, featuring in a couple of high-profile games. Scott Carson is the 3rd choice goalkeeper at City.
Pep Guardiola looks to have sorted his defence ahead of another season of gruelling football. The trio Aymeric Laporte, John Stones, and Ruben Dias are all competing for a spot in central defence. This means one top defender is certain to miss out on a starting berth every Matchday. Nathan Ake will be useful to provide cover in case of injuries, as well as being a quality replacement in the cup games.
Benjamin Mendy is again out of the squad, this time suspended due to allegations of rape. That leaves only Oleksandr Zinchenko as the recognised left-back in the squad. Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo will play on the right of defence with the latter having the ability to also play on the left of defence in place of Zinchenko.
The midfield is the engine room of any Pep Guardiola side. At Barcelona, he had the likes of Andres Iniesta and Xavi, at Bayern Munich he had Phillip Lahm and Thiago Alcantara. At Manchester City this season, Guardiola would have at his disposal Kevin de Bruyne, Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan, Fernandinho, Bernardo Silva and Yangel Herrera.
Any of these players will be confident if deployed as first-choice, apart from 23-year-old Venezuelan player, Herrera. The recent departure of David Silva has been felt for some time for his quick passing and vision.
The Citizens have an abundance of attacking talent at the club. Raheem Sterling, Ferran Torres, Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Patrick Roberts are some of the outstanding forwards in the Manchester City squad.
Added to this is the £100m signing of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa. Without a recognised No 9 apart from Gabriel Jesus, Guardiola will likely play with a false nine all season. An extensive bid for Tottenham Hotspur striker, Harry Kane came to nought as the transfer window slammed shut on August 31st.
