Pope Francis is maybe, the most famous Argentinian person ever, with a level of fame similar as Diego Maradona's and Lionel Messi's. Recently, he was interviewed by the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport and talked about a lot of topics directly or indirectly related to sports.

Francis talked about the good values that sport encourages, as inclusion, tolerance, effort and force of will. And stated that the talent is important but worthless if comes without hard work to endure it. And of course, a question about Diego Maradona was unavoidable, and the figure of the Catholic religion told what he saw on him.

Jorge Bergoglio said Maradona was a poet and a great champion, and will never forget the joy he brought to millions of people, in Argentina and in Naples. But he added that Diego was a very fragile man, and that led him to all the excesses that many times put his life in danger.

Francis has always been a big soccer fan. His first memory soccer related was when his boyhood club, San Lorenzo, won the Argentinian league in 1946. The little Jorge was just 10 years old then. He liked to play as a goalkeeper, and he told that position taught him to be ready to face danger.
