Cristiano Ronaldo has equalled Iker Casillas's Champions League record of most appearances by a footballer after he was named in Manchester United's starting 11 against Young Boys of Switzerland in the first match of this season.

 

Casillas made 177 UEFA Champions League appearances for Real Madrid and Porto, winning the competition three times with Real Madrid. He made 150 appearances for Real Madrid and 27 for Porto to set the record.

 

Ronaldo, who recently returned to Manchester United from Juventus prior to today's match has played 176 Champions League games for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus and has won the competition five times. He played 101 games for Real Madrid, 23 for Juventus and will play his 53rd game for Manchester United today.

 

Ronaldo is also the highest goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League with 134 goals. He and Casillas were teammates at Real Madrid and both won the 2014 Champions League together. The record is Ronaldo's now, with at least six group games to play, he will surely break the record and set a new one.
