Diego Maradona was a huge icon of soccer in general but was especially linked with more than a club. Napoli on top of all, the Italian side adored him in his spell from 1984 to 1991, he had become a God in the city. Also, his beloved Boca Juniors and Argentinos Juniors, in which he raised himself as a soccer player.

Still, if you ever walk the streets of Argentina’s capital city Buenos Aires, you will hear lots of myths around Maradona’s background in his childhood and the clubs he may have supported. Although lots of possibilities have been mentioned decade after decade, there was a very strong version that is now confirmed.

Diego Maradona was born in 1960, and his big idol was Indeoendiente’s glory Ricardo Enrique Bochini. Bochini, six years older than Maradona, was already playing in the Red Devils when the later soccer legend was giving his first steps. In 1986 they would share the World Cup winning squad in Mexico. His idolised team-mate played five minutes in the semifinal against Belgium.

Bochini played his whole life in Independiente, over 630 games between 1972 and 1991. Fellow club glory Daniel Bertoni, who scored the last goal for Argentina in the 1978 World Cup Final, recognized that Maradona to be a fan of Independiente in his childhood. “He went to our stadium to watch Bochini, Pavoni and me”, he confessed.
