However, the match started with many fouls and it was only 15 minutes into the match when Alexander Domínguez, Ecuador's goalkeeper, was sent off after kicking striker Matheus Cunha.

This gave the visitors the lead, but Emerson, a Tottenham player who had been cautioned since the first minute, committed another foul in the 20th minute which led to a red card. After the sending off of the Brazilian player, the match was evened up again.

The visitors could have been reduced to nine when Alisson was red-carded at 26' for hitting Valencia's head with his foot, but the red card was rectified two minutes later.

The match ended badly when at 92' there was a penalty for Ecuador, Alisson hit Preciado inside the area in a tight play, as the goalkeeper first touched the ball. Roldán sent Alisson off for a double yellow card and went to the VAR. There, the Colombian referee decided to overturn the booking and the red card to leave the final score at 1-1.

Brazil remains at the top of the CONMEBOL qualifiers, while Ecuador holds third place and with two rounds remaining is close to qualifying for Qatar 2022.
