But even though the strikers are the most followed players in the transfer rumors, for a team to have success on the offense, they need to have a strong enough defense that can held the rivals out of the scoring board and to help the goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet.

South America has characterized for their fierceful players in any position of the field, but the defenders of CONMEBOL know that they have to fight for every ball as if they were playing a final, given that winning a game in the CONMEBOL Qualifiers is one of the most difficult things to do in the soccer world.

Which South American defenders are ready to take the leap to big European Clubs?

There’s a lot of players that have enough soccer quality to join any of the major leagues, especially on a year where the World Cup will be played. Some of them have already been linked to European clubs in the past transfer window, although their arrival will have to wait until the summer.

Diego "Chiqui" Palacios is a 22-year-old Ecuadorian defender that plays as a left-back for MLS side Los Angeles FC since 2019. He joined LAFC out of SD Aucas and so far, he’s played a total of 52 games for the Black and Gold, where he’s managed to assist three times.

The Ecuadorian Piero Hincapié already plays in Europe, as he joined Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for the current season, although his performances for the Eternal Bridesmaids haven’t gone unnoticed and could be sold in the next transfer window for a figure around $28 to $35 million, making him the highest transfer price for an Ecuadorian player. So far, he’s played 19 games, scoring two goals and assisting one time.

Another player that can make that leap to Europe is Adonis Frías. The 23-year-old center back has established himself as a regular in Argentinian side Defensa y Justicia, as he’s played 65 games since joining the senior club in 2018 after being loaned for a season to CA Los Andes.

Haider Landázuri is a 22-year-old Colombian left-back that is playing in Europe since the beginning of the current season, although he still needs to prove that he can play in a top club, as he’s yet to debut with Serbian side FK Proleter Novi Sad, club that he joined out of Bogotá FC.

Kluiverth Aguilar is the youngest player on this list, but also one of the most promising ones. The 18-year-old Peruvian right-back was acquired by Manchester City out from Alianza Lima for the 2021-22 season, although he was immediately sent on a loan to Belgian side Lommel SK. So far, he’s played 5 games in the Jupiler Pro League.
