After knowing the 32 teams that will participate in the Copa Libertadores 2022, this Friday, March 25, the draw for the group stage was held at the CONMEBOL Convention Center in Paraguay, Asuncion.

What was the format of the draw?

The 32 teams (28 teams qualified directly, plus the 4 teams that advanced from Phase 3) were divided into 8 groups of 4 clubs each, to compete in the Group Phase. 

The composition of the groups is established according to the champions of the CONMEBOL Libertadores 2021 and the CONMEBOL club ranking of December 16, 2021.

The 2021 Libertadores 2021 champion team was seeded in Group A. While from B to H was completed according to the position of the clubs in the FIFA ranking. In turn, two clubs from the same country will be accepted in the group, only if one of the clubs is from Phase 3 of the competition.

How will the Copa Libertadores group stage be played?

The Group Stage will be made up of 32 teams, divided into eight zones. The two best teams in each group will advance to the round of 16. The eight third-placed teams, together with the four losers of Phase 3, will advance to play in this year's Copa Sudamericana.

The round of 16 will be determined by a draw, which will pit the top eight against the eight runners-up from the Group Stage. All the ties will be round-robin, with the exception of the final, which will be played in a single match in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
