The United States team is emerging as the main favorite to win the title of the Gold Cup that will begin on July 10, and of which it will host, since all the games will be played in its territory. Their main competition? Mexico, which with 8 titles placed first on the podium, as the biggest winner in the history of the competition.
The value of the Gold Cup is sometimes strange. The same teams sometimes send their best squad and sometimes the second team to fulfill other commitments. One to do it this year is the United States National Team, which will not have the one that is used to being its captain: Christian Pulisic.
Now, despite being the organizer and top candidate, the United States will present an alternative team for the 2021 Gold Cup. This does not mean that it will not be competitive, but that it will have to accommodate some pieces to be able to appear in the close-ups, as it is estimated that it will end up happening.
Before Pulisic's departure, the team captain will be Tim Ream, who serves as a central defender for Fulham in England.
This while the only footballers playing outside the local league will be Erik Palmer-Brown from Man City, Shaq Moore from Tenerife, Matthew Hoppe from Schalke 04, Julian Green from Greuther Fürth, Nicholas Gioacchini from SM Caen, Cameron Carter-Vickers from Tottenham and Reggie Cannon from Boavista.
According to the regulations imposed by Concacaf, the list should be shortened, until the 23 possible players are selected, who will finally be those who compete in the competition. Once it has been delivered, changes due to force majeure or injury will only be allowed up to 24 hours before the first game of the group stage of each team, with their respective prior authorization from Concacaf.
The Gold Cup will begin on July 10, with the initial group stage. In it, 16 teams will look for a place within the 8 that will advance in the contest. For that, they will be divided into 4 groups of 4, and the first 2 will qualify for the next round.
State Farm Stadium of Glendale, Arizona, and AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will host the quarterfinals on July 24 and 25. The semifinals will be played on July 29, at NRG Stadium in Houston and at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.
The finalists will travel to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, to meet in the final on August 1.
