Soccer is one of the most exciting sports in the world, among other reasons, because something unexpected can always happen. Logic does not always work on the pitch and powerful teams are sometimes defeated by much lesser ones. In the same way, money does not ensure positive results and expensive players do not always perform up to expectations.

That's what Todd Boehly is learning. The owner arrived at Chelsea just over a year ago with the goal of making the club one of Europe's top clubs again. That's why he invested a fortune in the last few transfer windows to sign top players to help improve the team.

In January, the Blues paid $140 million to Benfica for Enzo Fernandez and $112 million to Shakhtar Donetsk for Mykhailo Mudryk, among other signings. During their first six months at Stamford Bridge, things did not go well and they could not do much to improve the team's performances. That is why this summer Boehly hired Mauricio Pochettino as coach and a host of players, such as Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer, Robert Sanchez and Nicolas Jackson.

In total, the investment during the last transfer window was $540 million. Adding the $420 million they had already spent at the beginning of the year, the total amount during 2023 is $960 million. That means that on average they spent more than $2.5 million per day on player recruitment.

Money doesn't buy everything

The impressive investment did not pay off immediately. In the 2022/23 season, Chelsea finished 12th in the standings, out of all international competitions. And they are currently in a similar situation: in tenth place in the Premier League. However, there is still hope for them. Most of the players they bought are very young and will undoubtedly improve a lot with a little time.
