Bad news for the Stars and Stripes! Gio Reyna, USMNT international and one of their brightest players, was injured 52 seconds into the game.
Qatar 2022 World Cup: USMNT's qualification in jeopardy if they slip up against Iran
Borussia Dortmund was playing their match against VfB Stuttgart, when the game had to be stopped, for the player to leave the field in tears, as injuries have robbed him of many minutes of playing time.
The ball was just starting to roll at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and barely passed the first minute of the match when he tried to make a connection with one of his teammates when he felt discomfort in the back of his right leg.
Instantly, the player stopped running and turned to look at the bench, immediately asking for a change, because even though he tried, he could not continue the game.
The referee stopped the game and Gio Reyna walked off the field, while he was consoled by teammates and rivals; as he left the field, he simply burst into tears.
The attacker had just returned to the starting eleven after five months of absence due to injury, but in just one minute, he suffered a muscle injury and was substituted.
And if there was anything more painful than the player's injury, it was the sight of him crying as he left the pitch, accompanied by doctors from Borussia Dortmund's medical staff.
Injuries have so far been Gio Reyna's main problem in his playing career, and so far they have caused him to miss more than 33 games for Borussia Dortmund.
And serious injuries have been the player's most recurrent problem since a muscle injury left him out of the field for 84 days, and another one due to a training deficit, which kept him away from the field for 56 days.
In the current season alone, Reyna has missed 19 games due to muscle injuries with Dortmund, but these injuries also took their toll on him with the USMNT, as the player also missed several qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
And in the absence of a concrete diagnosis from Marco Rose's medical staff, Reyna is expected to miss at least the match against Wolfsburg next weekend, and will likely also miss the German derby against Bayern Munich on April 23 this year.
Despite the loss of the American player, Borussia defeated Stuttgart by a score of 0-2 to move into second place in the Bundesliga standings, 6 points behind Bayern Munich, who leads the league with 66 points.
