Birmingham City, of the English second division (Championship), has announced the dismissal of Wayne Rooney as its coach after only 15 games and 83 days in charge of the team. The legend of the English national team was appointed as coach on October 11, after the controversial dismissal of his predecessor, John Eustace, when the team was sixth in the competition.

However, under Rooney the team's performance has plummeted until it lost nine of the 15 games played and fell to twentieth position in the standings. The latest 3-0 defeat against Leeds on New Year's Day ended the patience of the club's owners, who had promised to restore attacking football under the leadership of the 38-year-old former Manchester United striker.

In a statement, the club points out that “the results have not met the expectations set from the beginning” and therefore “the club is interested in a change of coach.

Birmingham City CEO Gary Cook said that “unfortunately, Wayne's spell did not go as planned,” and as a result they have decided to “move in another direction.”

Rooney's relief

“The search for a successor begins with immediate effect and we will inform fans when we have news,” Cook said after thanking Rooney for his work and that of his second, Carl Robinson, also fired. Youth coach Steve Spooner will take charge of the team on an interim basis while a replacement for Rooney is found.
