Both Barca and Bayern Munich were targeting Xabi Alonso as their new coach for next season. Barca appointing Alonso seems unlikely, while Bayern faces competition with Liverpool to bring in Xabi Alonso this summer.

Bayern Munich has just appointed Max Eberl as the new board member of sport. Eberl has experience as a sporting director and almost appointed Xabi Alonso at Borussia Monchengladbach. Eberl spoke to the press and mentioned what he wants from the new Bayern manager and the team.

Eberl said, "We want a coach who fits with the club and its ambitions - who also fits with the ideas that Christoph [Bayern sporting director] and I have about the squad. One of the big names is Roberto De Zerbi, who is a manager that Eberl likes for Bayern Munich. FC Barcelona has reportedly identified De Zerbi as the main candidate to replace Xavi at Barca. De Zerbi is rumored to leave Brighton and Hove Albion this summer and will have his options open, including a move to Barca or Bayern Munich.
