The South Korean national team were one of the favorites to win the 2024 Asia Cup title. They had advanced to the knockout stage after beating Bahrain 3-1 and drawing 2-2 vs Jordan and 3-3 vs Malaysia. In the round of 16 they went to penalty shootout after drawing 1-1 against Saudi Arabia and advanced to the knockout stage, where they beat Australia 2-1 in extra time.

In the semifinals, they faced Jordan again, but this time things did not go as expected and they suffered a tough 2-0 defeat that eliminated them from the continent's most important tournament. This was a failure for them, considering that they were one of the main favorites and that they had big stars that stand out in important clubs in Europe.

However, as the days went by, details of what happened in the days leading up to the decisive match became known and turned the defeat into a scandal. The night before the semi-final game against Jordan, some of the squad's younger players (including Paris Saint-Germain's Kang-in Lee) left dinner early to play table tennis and have some fun. This did not go down well with the team's skipper, Tottenham's Heung-min Son, who confronted them.

Apparently things got out of hand and it all ended in a fight between the two stars. Son reportedly grabbed Lee by the collar and the young midfielder reacted with a punch. In the end, the Spurs winger suffered two dislocated fingers on his right hand and had to play the next day with bandages on it.

Lee had to apologize

Once these details about the fight became known, Kang-in Lee had no choice but to share a message of apology on his official Instagram account. He wrote: "I have caused great disappointment to all those football fans who support the national team. I am so sorry. I should have listened to the older players and I apologise for not showing a good attitude. From now on, I will try to support the senior players and become a better player and person."
