Laureus Sport confirmed today that Lionel Messi has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for his first season with Inter Miami. Messi won the 2023 Leagues Cup with Inter Miami last summer, and the Argentine was the best player in the tournament. Lionel Messi arrived in the summer and didn't play the full season last year since the MLS season usually starts in March.

Messi's nomination has become historic as it's his eighth nomination for this award. That is the same number of nominations as Tiger Woods. Laureus Sport's X account wrote, "An incredible record of nominations for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award, now held by two greats - Lionel Messi and Tiger Woods." Erling Haaland is another nominee for this award after his incredible season with Manchester City, where they won a historic treble.
