Rui Vitória was sacked as Egypt coach following their exit from the African Cup of Nations, and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah sent a farewell message. Mohamed Salah has bid farewell to Egypt's former head coach Rui Vitória, who was relieved from his role following a disappointing African Cup of Nations campaign. Egypt did make it to the knockouts but were beaten by DR Congo on penalties and after their early exit, the Pharaohs announced Vitória's dismissal.

The reason why Xabi Alonso will be Klopp's heir-apparent is surprising

It comes after the Egypt boss criticized Jürgen Klopp after Salah picked up an injury during the tournament. Salah injured his hamstring against Ghana and returned to Liverpool for treatment. However, it was decided he would rejoin his teammates if they made it to the latter stages of the competition. Klopp confirmed the news in a press conference but his comments did not go down well with Vitória. He criticized Liverpool's handling of the injury setback.

He stated: "We didn't want to alarm anyone. I didn't think it was right for Liverpool, via any intermediary, to speak about this, because we had a tremendously important game today. Salah has always been with us. Now this game is over we will find the best solution for the treatment of the player. These are the facts. This is the situation.

"Before the game we did not want to say anything. Meanwhile, everything was in the control of our excellent medical team." Klopp later apologized to Vitória, but all turned out moot as Egypt could not stay long enough in the competition for Salah to make a comeback.

Reds remain linked with a move for Joshua Kimmich, while another offer looms

Scenario context

Vitória became Egypt's coach in July 2022 and had planned to stick around until after the 2026 World Cup after winning 12 out of his 14 matches leading up to the African Cup of Nations. But he has found himself without a job, replaced by ex-Al Ahly coach Mohamed Youssef on a temporary basis.
