Everyone has some kind of idol or role model they look up to. It could be a role model/idol for life purposes, or it could be one in the field you pursue. That is the case in football as if you ask every player, they will tell you there is someone they looked up to when they were younger. Messi had Juan Roman Riquelme as his idol, Neymar had a few like Pele and Messi. In today’s generation, most players will probably say Ronaldo or Messi, and some may say a fellow countryman out of respect.

Erling Haaland has taken the football world by storm over the last year and a half, after arriving in Manchester City. Record after record being broken, every game it seems like he would score a hat trick. It was the kind of goal scoring prowess football had not seen since the duels between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo every year. Haaland obliterated the Premier League, and in the Champions League it’s not much different as the Norwegian would score more goals than games played in both competitions.
Haaland is climbing up the Champions League charts and if he continues at this rate, he will set his sight on his footballing idol’s UCL record. Cristiano Ronaldo is “Mr. Champions League”, but that title could come under threat. While Haaland had an incredible year, so did Cristiano Ronaldo as he enjoyed his first year at Saudi Arabia. The legendary player had a bounce back year after a struggling 2022 where he fell out with the club, he once loved the most in Manchester United. Saudi Arabia offered CR7 a fresh breath of air outside of Europe and the player thrived for it.
The two players linked up with each other today at the Globe Soccer Awards where they were both nominated for awards. Haaland desperate to win an award after losing two big ones to Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo looking to add another award to the long collection.
