After Manchester United dominated for most of the first half, Newport County reached a comeback and tied the game 2-2. Manchester United looked very comfortable in the first half, leading 2-0 in 30 minutes. Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo scored the two early goals for Man United. United got too calm when Newport scored a rocket from outside the box to make it 2-1. Man United was leading 2-1 at halftime, but the League Two side was a goal away from drawing.
In the second half, Newport did get their equalizer and were close to pulling an upset. Will Evans poked the ball past Bayindir with a slight deflection from Varane. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, Newport County is the first lower league side to score 2+ goals in an FA Cup game against Manchester United. Will Evans equalized against Manchester United for Newport with his 19th goal of the season. Evans is a Manchester United fan and only turned professional in 2022. Three years ago, he was a farmer milking cows and playing part-time football.

Manchester United needed to get back into the game before Newport scored a third. Newport was close and motivated to score another, but the Man United team continued to attack to score. The third goal for the Red Devils arrived as Antony tapped in the ball after hitting the post from a shot by Luke Shaw. Man United is hanging on to the lead and is minutes away from advancing.
