At a time when Barcelona is positioning itself to re-sign him for next season, Leo Messi has preferred to keep quiet and has not made a statement about his future. It seems he is patiently waiting to see how events unfold until the time comes to make a decision. He knows that first he has a full season ahead of him, that the World Cup is just around the corner where —of course— he has high hopes and he is no longer a young man.

It is clear that Messi's retirement is approaching and the results of the World Cup and how the new season goes at PSG will weigh on his future. Maybe he will decide join MLS, or accept to renew with PSG (for the French club it is very profitable to have him), to hangs up his boots or return to Barcelona, an option that is the upmost desire of every Barcelona fan, including Xavi.

Each possibility has pros and cons. And so does returning to Barcelona. On the one hand, there is the sentimental aspect, as he left Barcelona with a broken heart and he would probably want to return to have better closure. Also, there is the fact that his family would want to return to the city where his children grew up as they left many friends behind.

Another issue would be the tension with Joan Laporta, who in the United States has declared on a couple of occasions his desire to make things right with Messi. And for that he is willing to do anything. Messi would have to see that this is really the case in order to take a definitive step back to Barcelona.

Barça still has a place in Messi's heart

Messi was able to say goodbye to the club but not to the fans and this is a thorn that remains stuck in his heart, as he has declared. Being able to return to Camp Nou to say goodbye to the fans who have supported him so much during his career would be another of the reasons that would pave the way back.

Leo Messi keeps his home in Castelldefels and both he and his family keep coming back regularly to meet the friends or relatives they left behind in Barcelona, a sign of the link that still binds the Argentine to Barça.
