Manchester United couldn’t finish the 2021-22 Premier League season in Champions League spots given that they received 57 goals, making their defense a priority to reinforce for next season now that Erik ten Hag is in charge of the team.

Although Manchester United paid $93 million for Harry Maguire three seasons ago, the English captain hasn’t been able to adapt to United’s system, as he has only thrived with a line of five in the back, something that The Red Devils barely do.

The high number of goals conceded is something that United needs to lower if they want to be serious candidates for the Premier League next season, which is why they are looking to add at least a new center back before preseason starts.

One of their options plays in Italy

According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Manchester United are in the race for signing Serie A side defender Alessandro Bastoni, who currently plays for Inter Milan, and is set to leave over the summer and Premier League seems to be his next destination.

But United are not the only English team interested in signing the 23-year-old center-back, as Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City are also pursuing his addition, with both teams having Champions League participation next season.

The bright side for The Red Devils, is that Erik ten Hag will have a transfer budget big enough to convince teams to sell and players to arrive at Old Trafford, although a good plan to return to Europe’s biggest competition next year is also a good incentive. If United were to convince Bastoni and Inter, they will have to pay $64 million for his economic rights.
