Since Erik ten Hag arrived at Manchester United, his priority has been to rebuild the roster, not only because they had a lot of spots to fill and never complemented as a team, but also because several players have become free agents.

One of the main positions that the Dutchman needs to reinforce is on the attack, as Cristiano Ronaldo is currently the only striker on the roster that can score consistently, as he was the only United player in the 2021-22 Premier League Season that scored double digits.

That’s why they have been looking for a new striker to complement what Cristiano Ronaldo does for The Red Devils and what Edinson Cavani couldn’t do on his second and last season at Old Trafford, as the Uruguayan striker only scored two goals and missed half of the season due to injuries.

They are ready to pay $80 million for their new striker

According to reports from Portuguese media O Jogo, Manchester United are the team closest to sign Benfica side striker Darwin Núñez, as he’s become a priority for Erik ten Hag. And even if the Uruguayan striker has said that he wants to continue his career in Premier League, negotiations are stuck between both teams.

Benfica are looking to receive an offer for at least $107 million, but Manchester United don’t have planned to go that high for a starting offer, although they are willing to go as high as $80 million, an offer close to the economic pretensions of Benfica.

Although he has a $154 million release clause that Benfica would like to be triggered, it looks improbable that The Red Devils are going to pay almost the double of what they are offering, and negotiations are expected to continue, with Jorge Mendes, Nuñez’s agent, intervening in favor of United.
