One of the great protagonists of this Wednesday's European Super Cup in Helsinki, between Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt, is undoubtedly Karim Benzema. Precisely, in the run-up to the match, the French striker, one of the best of the moment, has appeared before the media and admitted regarding his evolution as a footballer that the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo was key, when he felt he had to change his game and his ambition.

"After Cristiano's departure, it is true that I scored many more goals, but with him I played a different kind of game, as an assistant. He helped me a lot on and off the field, I knew I could give more and, when he left, I had to change my game and ambition," he said at a press conference at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki.

Benzema recalled the success of the last Champions League that allows Real Madrid to fight for the European Super Cup: "The road was very difficult and very good for us because every game was a battle. Today is a dream that can be fulfilled tomorrow with a victory. It is a very important match. We come from a good preseason, we are ready and as European champions we are going to give everything to win the match and take the trophy to Madrid".

Without thinking about his chances for the Ballon d'Or, Karim puts the interests of his team first: "I'm not the one to say if I'm the best or not. Every year I give the maximum in what for me is the best club in the world. My level has to go up every year, even if last year was a very good season".

Age is not an issue for Benzema

And he ruled out that age, he will turn 35 next December, is a handicap in today's soccer. "There is no age. It is true that we are not young but we work hard on our bodies, both on and off the pitch and we rest well. We have a good squad, hopefully better than last year to fight for everything," he said.
