On October 2020, the board of directors chaired by Josep Maria Bartomeu renewed Gerard Piqué until 2024, Ter Stegen until 2025 and Clément Lenglet and Frenkie de Jong until 2026. Seven days later, the head of the Blaugrana club made public his resignation from his post, a week after signing four new 'poisoned' contracts.

The four players involved accepted a renewal are lower salaries, which they would later recover. According to the previous board of directors, these four renewals meant a salary saving of between 16 and 18 million euros; in addition to a saving of 15 'kilos' for the amortizations of each of the contracts.

This saving, as estimated by the previous board of directors, will mean a long-term salary cost overrun of 311 million euros. Bread for today and hunger for tomorrow. Barça wants these contracts to be void and return to the conditions in which they were before signing these renewals.

Barcelona willing to go to legal instances

The club has been dealing with the matter for three months with a law firm, with the aim of getting Piqué, Lenglet, Ter Stegen and De Jong to waive the subsequent increase they had stipulated in their last signed contract. Similarly, if those involved do not come to their senses, FC Barcelona plans to take the case to the Public Prosecutor's Office because they see criminal indications of unfair administration, accusing the previous board of directors.
