The saga of Frenkie de Jong continues its course and now a new issue has appeared that keeps him in “trouble” with Barcelona. The azulgrana team has told the Dutchman that it wants to annul the existing contract to return to the conditions he had before. This is because the terms have irregularities and provide grounds for legal action.

According to The Athletic's sources, Barcelona wrote to De Jong on July 15 claiming to have found indications of criminal actions by the parties who signed his renewal on October 20, 2020. The management was part of Josep Maria Bartomeu's process. That two-year extension until 2026 reduced his salary for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, leaving €18 million to be spread over the following four campaigns as part of a way of 'retaining' the player.

Barcelona asked the footballer to cancel the agreement in order to return to previous terms and push to normalize his situation. The Catalan club sees it as unfeasible to continue to pay the player's current salary and is trying to lower it.

The Athletic adds that Barça are considering legal action, although they prefer to reach a new agreement with the player. For the moment, both De Jong and his entourage are not too much in favor of lowering his salary as they understand that they already did it in the past by making a great effort and that now it would be his turn to collect the back wages from the current course.

Will Frenkie stay in Barcelona?

If a final agreement is not reached, Barcelona will open the doors for him to negotiate his departure. Chelsea and Manchester United have already made proposals, but the player does not want to leave. The situation is complicated and the club wants to control wages to be able to register the signings.
