Prior the 2022 MLS Season, Inter Miami FC struggled to find a place in the Major League Soccer, as the Herons battled to find a way of functioning like a team, even with players like Gonzalo Higuaín or Rodolfo Pizarro, who never found regularity.

Who is Leonardo Campana, the Ecuadorian who plays as a striker for Inter Miami CF?

In their first two seasons in MLS, they couldn’t make it into the playoffs, as in 2020 they finished as 10th in the Eastern Conference and were eliminated in the preliminary round for the playoffs, and in 2021 they finished 11th, away from the playoff spots.

For the current season, it seemed like they were going to have a similar outcome, as they parted ways with Rodolfo Pizarro, their most expensive transfer in their short history, who was sent on a loan to CF Monterrey after a disappointing stint with the Herons.

And even if Gonzalo Higuaín was their starting striker, the former Real Madrid hasn’t been able to show why he played in the biggest European teams, as he managed to score only 12 goals last season, becoming the highest scorer for Inter Miami with a disheartening streak.

Leonardo Campana, their new idol

During the preseason, Inter Miami decided to add some competition to improve Higuaín’s performances, which is why they decided to acquire Leonardo Campana on a one-year loan with option to buy from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Little did they know that Campana was going to become the player they needed to finally thrive in the MLS, as thanks to his performances, they’ve won the last three games in a row in MLS as well as their opening game in the US Open Cup.

The goal that the 21-year-old Ecuadorian striker scored against Atlanta United last weekend to give the Herons the 2-1 victory became the Goal of the Week, something that helped him become the Man of the Match, as well as making an appearance in the Team of the Week.

Will he remain in Inter Miami?

Campana seems to have found the perfect team for becoming an idol, as he is on the battle to become the Golden Boot of the season, as he’s just one goal away from the top strikers after nine rounds. He’s also on pace for becoming the top scorer of the Herons -Gonzalo Hinguaín is currently the top scorer, with 14 goals-.
