"It is not reasonable that Marcelo Flores' decision is subject to a World Cup": Gerardo Tata Martino

Even if it’s a game where the Aztec squad won’t have the usual players given that is not a FIFA match window and the teams are not obliged to loan their players, Gerardo “Tata” Martino decided to use the game to tryout youngsters that usually don’t have a chance.

But Martino knows that there’s still things to improve in the current roster, which is why some of the players that will be on the pitch against Guatemala can end up sneaking in one of the last open spots on the roster to Qatar.

Although the main problem that Martino has to face prior the 2022 FIFA World Cup is not related to the level showed by El Tri in the CONCACAF Qualifiers, but instead to the fact that he might not make it to Qatar given his health problems.

Yon de Luisa already took a decision

Mexican Football Federation announced earlier in the week that Gerardo Martino won’t be able to travel with El Tri to Orlando, Florida, which is why his place will be taken by Jorge Theiler, his assistant, something that he already did in the past.

Theiler was in the Aztec squad’s dugout on the game against Panama on the last FIFA match window given that Martino couldn’t travel with the team due to the retinal detachment treatment he’s going through.

If Martino doesn’t make it to the World Cup, De Luisa knows that the economic situation would prevent El Tri from parting ways with him, which is why they will give the responsibility to Theiler, as he knows the team and what Martino’s trying to establish.

How long will it take for him to recover?

According to reports, it will take from three up to six months for him to fully recover, but in the meantime, he’s not allowed to travel by plane, as well as complete the treatment and stay away from stressful situations.
