Mexico National Team faced their first friendly game of the year on Wednesday night in Orlando, Florida against Guatemala National Team on a game that had little emotions and ended in a scoreless draw that didn’t solve any of El Tri problems.

The bright side of the game was that Gerardo “Tata” Martino, even if wasn’t on the sidelines of Camping World Stadium due to his health condition, had the opportunity to see new faces that usually doesn’t have a chance of playing with the senior squad.

Martino took advantage of the absence of the players that he usually calls, as he opened the doors to 13 players that are part of the U-23 or younger categories, including Jordan Carrillo, Jonathan Gómez, Eduardo Aguirre, and Marcelo Flores.

Flores was the player that generated most expectation, as he’s called to be the next idol of the Mexican national team, something that was evident when he jumped in the pitch, as he was received with an ovation that few times happens.

Will Vela return to El Tri?

But the 18-year-old offensive midfielder couldn’t do much to help El Tri open the scoresheet, as on the 30 minutes that Jorge Theiler gave him on the pitch, Flores was only able to make one dribble, a sign that he’s not fully ready to play at a senior level.

That opens the possibility for Carlos Vela to return to El Tri, as Martino is still looking for a player that can score consistently, something that Flores showed that he’s not ready to do just yet and the usual strikers haven’t been able to do.

But Carlos Vela, who hasn’t played with the Aztec squad since they were eliminated by Brazil in the round of 16 of Russia 2018, maintains his decision of not returning to El Tri, as he knows that the younger players will have better opportunities of transcending.

Will Marcelo Flores play in Qatar?

The Arsenal U-23 is on a shortlist that Martino has, although for now it seems difficult that he’ll be part of the final roster. Things might change if he debuts in Premier League and is considered regularly by Mikel Arteta, as that would give him the maturity that he still hasn’t achieved.
