The Mexican national team was able to ensure ending at least as fourth in the CONCACAF Qualifiers with the 1-0 victory over Honduras in Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano, but it seems like they will have direct passage to the World Cup.

The only way in which El Tri is going to playoffs instead, is if they lose against El Salvador and Costa Rica crushes USMNT on Wednesday night, given that the most points that Costa Rica aspires to earn is 25, the same that the Aztec squad currently has.

The goal difference is what gives the Mexicans some sense of calm, as they have 4 more goals than the Ticos, making it almost impossible for them to fall to the fourth spot, but with a victory and a tie of the Stars and Stripes, they could climb to the second place.

At least on paper, everything is set for Mexico to ensure direct passage to Qatar 2022 on Wednesday night, although the fact that trident Gerardo “Tata” Martino has decided to start hasn’t scored a single goal when the three of them are on the pitch could complicate things.

Are they trying to get Martino out of El Tri?

Since Gerardo Martino decided to place Jesús “Tecatito” Corona, Raúl Jiménez, and Hirving “Chucky” Lozano as the three players in offense, they haven’t been able to score a single time in 359 minutes that they’ve shared on the pitch.

The issue they’re having not only has to do with the lack of goals, but mainly with the fact that they haven’t been able to adapt to what the Argentine coach needs, as their roles with their teams are different from what Martino requires.

“Tata” will have the following months to find an answer to the problem, whether he find a way of making them connect the way is needed or changing his 4-3-3 scheme, one he has refused to move even if the players would perform better in a different one.

Have the players lost confidence in Martino?

According to Mexico former international Rafael Márquez, who has been studying to become a coach and already made his debut in the third division in Spain, what El Tri has been lacking is offensive work, as they have the possession of the ball but don’t know how to end the plays.
