He’s now one of Mexico National Team’s most admired and respected players not only because of his abilities as a footballer but also because of the leadership he brings to the team when he’s on the pitch, but back in the day, when he was just a child, he used to sell tacos in the street to help his family survive.

He grew up in the streets of Tijuana, right in the border with San Diego, and he remembers there were times where he and his family only had enough money to eat once a day. When he turned 15, his parents crossed the border in order to help their kids have a better life.

Luckily for Héctor Herrera, his talent in the pitch wasn’t unnoticed and he joined CF Pachuca Academy, where he had his official debut and after a couple of years could fulfill his dream of playing in Europe. Nowadays he’s a substitute for Atlético Madrid, but he says it doesn’t really matter as long as he remembers where he started, even though he’d like to play more.

Héctor Herrera’s journey in Europe

He joined FC Porto in 2013 for a $12.5 million transfer out Los Tuzos. He rapidly became a regular in the Oporto lineup and a fan favorite, so much that he was captain on his last seasons in Portugal before he decided to leave the club as a free agent and join Atlético Madrid in 2019. He won La Liga last season but since the arrival of Rodrigo de Paul, he’s lost his starting role with Los Colchoneros.
