It’s no surprise to say that Carlos Vela is one of the best players Mexico currently has. That’s why a lot of people don’t understand why he’s not called to be part of Tata Martino’s squad every time El Tri plays, especially after not finding a player that could be the striker Mexico needs.

But Vela’s departure from the National Team was not only because of the disagreements he had with Mexico’s coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, nor because of his performances in the pitch. His retirement from El Tri is linked to someone outside the soccer world and inside his home.
In 2014, Carlos Vela met his future wife, Saioa Cañibano, who has made Vela prioritize his personal life rather than his professional career, as is not uncommon to see him with Saoia and his kids in the streets of LA or travelling around the world, something he wouldn’t be able to do if he was regularly called to El Tri.

One of the main reasons Vela decided to take a step back from El Tri has to do with the sponsors, as he disagrees with the small amount of money the players receive from sponsorships and from the FMF themselves, as they are the faces of the national team.
