As the 2022 FIFA World Cup gets closer, it’s becoming clearer that, within Mexico National Team camp, there’s different groups fighting for taking the lead and deciding the future of El Tri, not only on the pitch but the players that can be part of the roster.
If “Chicharito” returns to El Tri, this player is stepping down
One of the groups is led by the old guard: Guillermo Ochoa, Andrés Guardado and even Héctor Herrera, who are clinging to their spots in the starting XI even though they’re far from being what El Tri needs for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Rumors suggest that they were the ones that blocked Carlos Vela return to El Tri after Russia 2018, as Vela doesn’t have a good relationship with Ochoa, which is why some players are starting to speak up against him, as they also seem to think his time has passed.
According to reports, César Montes, Jesús Gallardo and Rogelio Funes Mori, all CF Monterrey players, think that Ochoa should step down from El Tri, just like Vela did, in order to leave the Aztec goal for a younger goalkeeper.
