Back in 2014, the competition for the starting role as goalkeeper for Mexico National Team was one of the most closed ones, as Guillermo Ochoa was ready to continue his career in La Liga and José de Jesús Corona had been part of El Tri squad that won the gold medal in the 2012 Olympic Games in London for the first time.

Although the CONCACAF Qualifiers were a disaster under José Manuel de la Torre, El Tri managed to access the World Cup after the playoffs where they beat New Zealand by an aggregate of 9-3 under Miguel Herrera’s coaching.
But once that Brazil 2014 was around the corner, Miguel Herrera had to make the tough choice of giving either one of the two goalkeepers the starting role on the squad, deciding for Guillermo Ochoa over “Chuy” Corona, in a decision incentivized by El Tri sponsors.
Both Miguel Herrera and Guillermo Ochoa were two of the most influential people in Mexico National Team, which is why they received $4 million from El Tri sponsors as part of the promotions of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which ultimately led into leaning the scale towards Ochoa.
