Every soccer fan remembers Mexico National Team in the 90’s, with a golden generation that included Jorge Campos, Luis Hernández, Claudio Suárez and Carlos Hermosillo, among many others. A team that beat Brazil in the Final of FIFA Confederations Cup in 1999 by a 4-3 score, making it the only National Team outside of UEFA and CONMEBOL to win it.
But having a squad full of now Mexican soccer legends, there’s still an open question: what happened during FIFA World Cup in 1998 in France? Why didn’t Mexico National Team make it to quarterfinals during that World Cup?
Jorge Campos revealed on an interview that there was an ego battle at the inside of the squad made things between the players heat so much they ended up in a fist fight, especially between him and Cuauhtémoc Blanco, who was playing his first World Cup. This incident definitely diminished El Tri’s performance during that tournament.
When did this fight happened?
Claudio Suárez stated that the fight started on the bus on the way to the stadium, prior to the game where Mexico was facing Netherlands National Team, after Blanco started making fun of Campos, saying he was the most famous Mexican player and not the goalkeeper, something that escalated so quickly it finished in the mentioned fist fight.
