It seems like Gerardo Tata Martino finally understood that what the Mexican national team needed to improve the performance of some of the players was giving the youngsters an opportunity of making it to the roster.

Martino has been severely criticized for the lack of young players that he calls to the roster, as he has previously said that he values experience over age, but by doing it, he has closed the door to multiple talents and has stuck the level of competitiveness within the squad.

That's something that has been manifested especially with the leaders in the locker room, like Héctor Herrera, who even if he finally is having regularity in Atlético Madrid, he has yet to show why he is one of Diego Simeone's predilect players in the las couple of months.

But the addition of young players has benefited others, like Guillermo Ochoa, who before Carlos Acevedo was part of El Tri, was involved in several mistakes that costed points to the Aztecs, but now, he realized that he needed to improve if he didn't want to lose his job to the Santos Laguna goalkeeper.

Is that why Martino called Acevedo?

For the current CONCACAF Qualifiers match window, Martino hasn't considered having Carlos Acevedo as one of the goalkeepers of El Tri, not even if he called 4 different players who he considered to be better than him.

But after the injury that Jonathan Orozco suffered with Xolos de Tijuana prior the FIFA break, Martino didn't have any other choice than to call Acevedo as his replacement, a decision that has been one of the best he's taken since arriving in El Tri.

Will Acevedo arrive in Qatar 2022?

Is still yet unknown if Martino keeps considering Carlos Acevedo as the fifth goalkeeper, as he had Guillermo Ochoa, Jonathan Orozco, Alfredo Talavera and Rodolfo Cota over him, although things can change after what he’s showed during the training sessions.

Acevedo hasn’t ensured his arrival in Qatar, although he definitely entered the conversation to be the third goalkeeper. But if reports of his departure from Santos over the summer to arrive in PSV Eindhoven, Martino won’t have any other choice than calling him for the final roster.
