It’s true that the results have been benefiting the Mexican national team, as they finished the CONCACAF Qualifiers tied for the first place of the confederation with Canada MNT, although the Canadians had a better goal difference and finished firsts.

But what Martino was criticized for is the lack of ideas that the players showed throughout the game, as they often relied in individualities to save the game, which is why Mexican followers don’t trust that he’s the best option for Qatar.

Nevertheless, Yon de Luisa ratified him as the coach that will be with El Tri for Qatar 2022 as the players also backed him up during the last game of the Qualifiers, closing the door to a potential return of Miguel Herrera to El Tri, who was the favorite to replace the Argentine coach.

Herrera still has options of arriving to a national team

With the opportunity gone for having a second stint with the Mexican national team, it seemed like he would have to remain in Tigres bench, team he’s currently coaching and that weren’t happy with the declarations that Herrera did regarding the continuity of Martino.

But after Chile national team were eliminated from Qatar 2022 in the last game of the CONMEBOL Qualifiers, given the victory of Peru, who clinched the playoffs spot, they are looking to have Miguel Herrera as their coach for the 2026 World Cup.

It’s worth mentioning that this is not the first time that the Chilean national team tries to sign “El Piojo” Herrera, as they already looked for him after Jorge Sampaoli left the team, months after Herrera was sacked from El Tri.

Colombia is also on the mix

Chile will have to start negotiating soon if they want to have Herrera on their bench, as Colombia, who were also eliminated from the 2022 World Cup, have Herrera as one of the potential coaches that can arrive in to help them return to the next World Cup.
