Although Gerardo “Tata” Martino won’t have the usual roster, given that is not a FIFA match window and the teams didn’t loan the players, especially the European ones, the Argentine coach will use the game to tryout different players that still have a chance of sneaking into the final roster.

According to reports, FIFA authorized to expand the roster from 23 player to 26, which gives Martino at least three extra spots to fill with players that even if they have the talent and the level needed, they haven’t been considered before.

But on top of those three extra spots, the Argentine coach knows that there’s players on the current roster that haven’t contributed to the Mexican national team on the past year, which is why he already is depurating the squad to open more spots to players that deserve to be called.

Martino already knows who’s the first player that won’t make it to Qatar 2022

the roster that Gerardo Martino called up for the game against Guatemala will only have three players that were part of the team in the past FIFA match window: Israel Reyes, Santiago Giménez and Carlos Acevedo.

The outstanding performances of the young players have earned them the possibility of preparing longer with the Mexican coaching staff, which increases their chances of making it to Qatar 2022. But Martino knows that another position that he needs to strengthen is the left-back.

Jesús Gallardo hasn’t been a reliable option for Martino, and even if Gerardo Arteaga has established on the starting role, he needs at least one substitute, as the Monterrey player is not expected to make it to the World Cup with his current performances.

Who are the players that could take his place?

Even if it’s the first game of the seven that El Tri will have in the next four months, Martino called three players that can play in that position to start increasing his options. So far, Jordan Carrillo from Santos, Jesús Angulo from Tigres and Jonathan Gómez from Real Sociedad B will have the chance of impress the Argentine coach.
