In Mexican Football Federation are trying to prevent another crisis like the one lived in 2014, when Mexico National Team had to go through the playoffs to earn their ticket to Brazil 2014, which is why they’re already looking for a replacement for Gerardo “Tata” Martino.

The Argentine coach will have one last chance to prove why he’s the coach that can take El Tri to the fifth game in a World Cup on Thursday night, when the Aztec squad receives USMNT in Estadio Azteca for the first game of the CONCACAF Qualifiers.

It’s worth remembering that El Tri has lost three straight wins against the Stars and Stripes, a result that FMF expects to change on March 24, especially since the Americans will arrive to the game with four key absences and Gregg Berhalter might not start his best XI.

But if the Aztec squad doesn’t manage to break the bad streak against USMNT, Yon de Luisa already has a coach on the queue ready to take over the Mexican national team for the last part of the cycle prior the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Who is the coach that will replace Martino?

Although Miguel Herrera has been the coach that has been linked the most to Mexico National Team, it’s almost impossible that he’s willing to leave his position in Tigres, as he has one of the best rosters in Liga MX and is a serious contender for Clausura 2022.

But according to reports from TV Azteca, FMF already established conversations with Club Puebla coach Nicolás Larcamón, as the Argentine coach has showed that he’s able to take on any challenge and turn it into a team that not only plays well but is ready to pursue a championship.

What will it take to sign Larcamón?

The idea that Yon de Luisa has is to have a coach that can replicate what Miguel Herrera did two World Cups ago, who took a team that was adrift and helped them reach the round of 16 in Brazil 2014, with the expectation of keeping that coach for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Even if Larcamón doesn’t have the experience that FMF requests for the coaches that arrive in El Tri, he’s showed what he’s capable of with La Franja, a team with a limited roster. The only obstacle on their way to sign him is the $900,000 release clause that his contract has, although they won’t have any problems paying it.
