In recent years, Héctor Herrera has become one of the most renowned and respected Mexican players in soccer, not only he was a fan favorite back when he played for FC Porto, where he even was captain, but also with Mexico National Team, as he is regularly called to all the matches they have.

And even when he first arrived in La Liga side Atlético Madrid, Herrera’s leadership and vision in the pitch made him a captain without an armband, especially during last season, when Atleti became La Liga champion after seven years of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid dominance.

But in the current season, Diego “Cholo” Simeone has completely erased him from the starting XI, and most of the times he stays benched, as he has only played in 9 out of 20 possible games. But his fate could change if Mexican entrepreneur Carlos Slim decides to buy Atlético.

Why would Carlos Slim buy Atlético Madrid?

Los Colchoneros have a debt with the Mexican billionaire after he helped the team build their new stadium, Wanda Metropolitano, for which Atlético Madrid owes him $227 million. Slim might consider buying a La Liga team, as he’s previously invested in lower division teams and other sports, especially to support Mexican athletes.
