One of the things that Mexico National Team will have to solve in the next few months before arriving at Qatar, is the lack of goals that they showed during the CONCACAF Qualifiers, as they were able to score 17 goals, but only six of them were scored by the strikers.

Gerardo “Tata” Martino is facing one of the most difficult decisions, as he will only have three forwards on the roster that plays in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but the truth is that out of the top three strikers he’s called to El Tri, not even Raúl Jiménez has been able to score consistently.

Jiménez was the Mexican forward that found the net more times, three and all of them via penalty kick. Henry Martín scored two more goals, the last one against Jamaica on January, and Rogelio Funes Mori was able to score just once, back in October against Honduras.

From what he’s showed, Martino has few other options to replace his top three strikers, as he considered Santiago Giménez for the last games of the CONCACAF Qualifiers, although he didn’t play a single minute.

Giménez, with the opportunity of leaving Liga MX

Even with the limits that Martino has established for the players he’s called up, excluding most of the younger players given that they don’t have enough experience, he already considered Giménez to be part of the first team.

Giménez, 20, will have the chance of increasing his presence in El Tri’s roster if he ends up leaving Liga MX once Clausura 2022 is over, as reports from ESPN suggest that La Liga side RCD Espanyol is closely following him.

The few opportunities that he’s received in La Máquina have opened the door for his departure, as even if the Barcelona team and one of FC Barcelona’s biggest rivals haven’t started negotiating with Cruz Azul, they know that Santiago Giménez is a player that could improve their roster.

How much will Espanyol have to pay?

If Los Periquitos end up pursuing his addition, they will have to pay at least $4.5 million, his current market value, although they can sign him for free if they wait until after Qatar 2022, as he’ll become a free agent at the end of next season.
