Mexico National Team will face Guatemala on April 27 in what will be the first friendly game of the year and also the starting match of the 2022 Mextour. The game will be played in Camping World Stadium, in Orlando, Florida, as part of the tour that El Tri does every year in the United States.

Given that the game will be played outside of a FIFA match window, Gerardo “Tata” Martino won’t be able to have his usual roster, as the teams, especially the European ones, didn’t accept to loan their players, as they’re preparing for the last part of the 2021-22 season.

That’s why the Argentine coach will use the game to tryout new players, as the roster is a mix of Liga MX, MLS and European youngsters that he will have the opportunity to have a closer look with the purpose of finding a couple of players that can strengthen the roster that will play in Qatar 2022.

Although Martino considered some of the players that were part of the roster on the past FIFA match window, like Carlos Acevedo or Israel Reyes -both of them had to watch the three games from the bench but must be starters for this game-, he also called some players that surprised everyone.

Who are the gems that Martino called?

“Tata” knows that players like Héctor Herrera, Andrés Guardado, Henry Martín and even Guillermo Ochoa haven’t played at a level worthy of a national team, and even if their participation in Qatar is almost ensured, he needs to start looking to replace them once the current cycle is over.

That’s why he called players that have possibilities of making it into the final roster for the 2022 World Cup, although they wouldn’t have a chance of playing for El Tri if it wasn’t for the friendly games. One of the players with strong possibilities is Marcelo Flores, who will debut in Premier League before the season is over.

Alejandro Zendejas is another player that is having an outstanding season, and if he keeps improving his performances, Martino won’t have any other choice than calling him up to Qatar. Same thing happens with David Ochoa, the 21-year-old goalkeeper who plays for Real Salt Lake and decided to wear El Tri colors.

Jonathan Gómez is still indecisive

A different thing happens with Jonathan Gómez, the 18-year-old left-back who plays in Real Sociedad B, who is still considering whether he plays for El Tri or USMNT. He already played a game for the Stars and Stripes, but given that it was a friendly match, he still can wear El Tri colors.
