The Mexican national team started with victory their summer matches, as in the first friendly game of the summer, as they beat 2-1 Nigeria, who even with most of their stars couldn’t stop the alternative lineup that Gerardo “Tata” Martino presented.

The players that left Cruz Azul and that Martino is considering taking to the World Cup in Qatar with the Mexican national team

It only took 12 minutes for the Aztec team to open the score, as Santiago Giménez didn’t waste the chance that Martino gave him and proved why he should be considered for the final roster that Mexico takes to the World Cup.

But Rodolfo Cota, who was one of the biggest surprises in the Starting XI that Martino decided to place, couldn’t do the same thing, given that he was responsible for the goal with which Nigeria equalize the game, as instead of sending the ball to a side of the goal, he tried to grab it and ended up falling inside the goal with the ball with him.

His mistake gave these goalkeepers the ticket to Qatar

Luckily for him, it only took two minutes for El Tri to regain the lead, as Jesús Gallardo crossed a ball that William Troost-Ekong tried to clear but ended up shooting against his goal, leaving Francis Uzoho out of the play, scoring the last goal of the match.

But the mistake that Cota had opened the door for two other goalkeepers to climb up the ladder and him to fall back in Martino’s list, as he was considered the second goalkeeper given that he was supposed to be reliable, although on the only chance that he had, he proved Martino otherwise.

His wasted opportunity now ensures that Guillermo Ochoa, as if there was any doubt about it, remains as the starting goalkeeper for Qatar, a place that only an injury will take away from him. Alfredo Talavera and Carlos Acevedo complete the list of goalkeepers that, at least for now, have their ticket ensured to Qatar, with Cota having to compete against Jonathan Orozco for the last ticket.
