Gerardo Martino's era at the helm of the Mexican national team came to an end after the elimination from the 2022 World Cup. The Argentinean coach was never able to establish himself as expected and now Mexico suffers a historic elimination after almost 8 World Cups qualifying for each World Cup.
In view of this situation, Martino assured that the team did not look its best and that he assumed full responsibility for the defeat. His departure was evident and the coach confirmed that he is no longer in charge. According to journalist Jose Ramon Fernandez of ESPN Mexico, the ideal coach would be Rafael Marquez, currently in charge of FC Barcelona's youth team. The tactician has communicated that his dream is to coach the national team, but that he will take on the role when he sees fit to do so.
