With one game left to be played in the CONCACAF Qualifiers, Mexico National Team has ensured their participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup as only USMNT and Costa Rica are still on the race to arrive in Qatar, but it seems most likely that the Ticos will end four and are going to the playoffs.

Mexican national team: Which teams would El Tri avoid in Qatar 2022 in the draw?

Mexico has a favorable match this Wednesday, as El Salvador are already eliminated and are going to play with a team full of players from the academy squads. Added to the fact that El Tri only needs a point to ensure direct passage, it’s safe to say that the Aztec squad will be playing in Qatar 2022.

Thanks to the victory of Portugal over North Macedonia, the Mexican national team will be on the Pot 2 of the Group Stage Draw, meaning they will avoid playing against teams like the Netherlands, Germany, Uruguay or Croatia, but there’s still a lot of options to be, once again, in the ‘group of death’.

The most difficult teams from Pot 1

Given that Qatar will receive the World Cup this year, they’re one of the 8 teams in the Pot 1, alongside with Belgium, Brazil, France, Argentina, England, Spain and Portugal. Even if facing any of the teams will be a difficult task, facing Qatar or even Belgium would be favorable to the Aztec squad.

The teams that every Mexican follower is praying to avoid sharing group with starts with Brazil, as they’ve played five games in the world cups and the Cariocas have won 4 of them. The only draw the Mexicans have managed to save was in Brazil 2014. If that wasn’t enough, El Tri has never been able to score against them in a World Cup.

Argentina is the second team on the list, as they have faced each other on three occasions and the three of them were a victory for La Albiceleste, including back-to-back eliminations in the round of 16 in 2006 and then 2010.

El Tri has played once against each of England, Portugal and Spain, losing the three games. The defeat against England happened in 1996 by a 2-0 score; the one against Portugal in 2006 by a 2-1 score; and the victory of Spain happened in 1962, with a 1-0 score.

The teams to avoid from Pot 3

El Tri has yet to face Serbia, although historically, they played once against a Balkans national team, when they faced Yugoslavia during the 1950 World Cup with a 1-0 victory for the Yugoslavians, which is reason enough to try to avoid sharing group with Serbia.

Another team that El Tri doesn’t want to meet again is Poland, as they have met previously once, during the 1978 World Cup in what meant a 3-1 victory for the Polish national team. In that World Cup, El Tri lost their three games.

The worst outcome for Mexico in the Pot 4

From the last pot of the Group Stage Draw, there’s still three places left to be filled, as the remainder teams that will be part of the World Cup will be decided in the June playoffs, although from the six teams that still have hope, only Wales has played against Mexico, in 1958 on a game that ended with a 1-1 draw.

El Tri can’t face Canada given that they’re from the same confederation and has yet to face all the other teams in Pot 4, or has beaten them, except for Tunisia, who defeated the Mexican national team by a 3-1 score during the 1958 World Cup.
