With only three games left, El Tri needs to win at least two of them and tie the other one to secure their direct assistance to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, something that seems achievable, as Honduras and El Salvador will arrive to their respective games as victims.

But the real challenge for both Mexico National Team and Gerardo “Tata” Martino will be on March 24, when they receive USMNT in Estadio Azteca, as the Bars and Stripes are a team that recently has been a complication for the Aztec squad.

In 2021, El Tri lost three straight games against USMNT, first in the final of Nations League by a 3-2 score. Then, one month later the Aztec squad fell again in the final of CONCACAF Gold Cup by a 1-0 score, and lastly in the World Cup Qualifiers, by a 2-0 score. That’s why Gerardo Martino is thinking of resigning if things don’t work for El Tri.

Will he be on the bench against USMNT?

According to sports journalist Miguel Arizpe, Martino lost the course with El Tri, which is why he presented his resignation letter after the defeat against Canada last year, same that he hasn’t retrieved as he feels that the players are not responding to his coaching system.

Yon de Luisa, FMF president, has said in multiple interviews that no one has guaranteed their stay in Mexico National Team, including “Tata” Martino, who could leave El Tri’s dugout if they don’t have a positive outcome on March 24.

Who could replace Martino?

Reports from sports media Sancadilla Norte suggest that Mexican Football Federation are in close contact with Miguel Herrera, who is willing to return to Mexico National Team’s dugout as he did for the 2014 World Cup, when he took over the process in the last months prior Brazil 2014.

In FMF they know they can’t have a new crisis like the one from 2014, which is why they will negotiate with Tigres to let Miguel Herrera arrive in El Tri, as he’s under contract with Los Felinos until the end of the 2022-23 season.
