El Tri hasn’t missed a single World Cup since Italy 1990, but their absence that year had to do with a scandal the Mexican team that played in the Olympics two years before that got them vetoed from any international competences and not because of sporting reasons.

And although it seems difficult that they’ll miss the World Cup this year, if things get complicated, it seems like they could have help in the upcoming FIFA match window to secure their assistance to the most important soccer tournament of the world.

According to reports, players from El Salvador National Team are refusing to accept the call to represent La Selecta for the last three games of the CONCACAF Qualifiers, when they’ll visit Jamaica, receive Costa Rica and finish their participation in Estadio Azteca.

Why don’t they want to play for El Salvador?

El Salvador currently stands sixth in the CONCACAF Qualifiers, eight points behind Panama, who are standing four and on the last place that gives a ticket to Qatar via a playoff berth, which means that their possibilities of being in Qatar are practically inexistent.

According to reports, Salvadorian players don’t want to expose themselves to the last FIFA match window as they will be mere procedure, given that they will have to win their three last games and that Panama doesn’t earn more than one point, something practically impossible.

If that wasn’t enough, on the past World Cup Qualifiers match window, they threatened to not play their last game against Canada MNT as they argued that the Salvadoran Football Federation were refusing to pay them the promised prizes for reaching the last stage of the Qualifiers.

What will happen if they don’t play?

According to Roberto Domínguez, Salvadoran defender, he doesn’t know why their teammates wouldn’t want to play, as he is always ready to play when the National Team calls him. But if most of the senior squad refuses to be called, Hugo Ernesto Pérez will have to fill the open spots with players from the U-20 and U-23.
