On the scoreless draw between Mexico National Team and Guatemala, the Mexican national team with an alternate lineup didn’t show big improvements from the performances showed during the CONCACAF Qualifiers.

In a match with little excitement, Mexico draws against Guatemala

The Aztec squad had the possession of the ball throughout the 90 minutes, but they couldn’t find one dangerous shot against the Panamanian goal, as neither Sebastián Córdova nor Santiago Giménez were able to get a clear goal option.

The good thing for the Mexican squad is that Gerardo “Tata” Martino was more focused on observing the players that could end up sneaking in the final roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, like Israel Reyes, Roberto “Piojo” Alvarado or Carlos Salcedo.

Among the players that surprised during their participation, was Marcelo Flores, who played 30 minutes after substituting “Piojo” Alvarado, and it seems that the few minutes that he had on the pitch were enough for him to decide to play for Mexico.

He did more than “Chicharito”

Flores has become one of the best academy players that El Tri currently has, as he’s impressed everyone on the games that the U-20 squad has faced recently, including the tour they had in Uruguay where he was compared to a younger Messi.

That’s what earned him his second cap with El Tri, and just as he jumped into the pitch, he realized that that’s all he needed to be convinced to play for El Tri, as he was received with an ovation that not even Javier “Chicharito” Hernández received.

The 18-year-old offensive midfielder tried to become the link between the midfield and Santiago Giménez, who up until his entrance didn’t have a clear goal option, and even if he only had one dribble in the 30 minutes he played, the experience acquired by playing with the senior team will help him to mature faster and be ready for his next call-up.

Will he play in the World Cup?

Martino recently said that before Marcel Flores starts thinking about a possible call-up for Qatar 2022, he needs to complete his growth process, as he still has a lot of things to develop to be considered both to play regularly in Premier League and with Mexico National Team.
