On Wednesday night, Mexico National Team will play the first friendly game of the year against Guatemala, on what leads off the Mextour around the United States. So far, El Tri has agreed to four more games from May until August.

Marcelo Flores already had his first problem with El Tri

For the game against Guatemala, the Argentine coach called Santiago Giménez and Eduardo “Mudo” Aguirre as the two forwards, given that the game is not played in a FIFA match window, and he couldn’t have the usual strikers he calls.

But due to the lack of goals that El Tri have had in the past year, especially in the CONCACAF Qualifiers, Martino is still looking for a striker that can constantly score, as he knows that is essential for El Tri to take advantage of every dangerous play they have.

After Martino said a few weeks ago that Javier “Chicharito” Hernández wouldn’t be considered to be part of the Mexican national team for as long as he is coaching El Tri, as there were reasons out of sports that prevented him from returning to El Tri.

He opened the door for “Chicharito”

The last time that “Chicharito” wore El Tri colors was in 2019, on a friendly game against USMNT that the Aztecs won 3-0 with a goal of Hernández. Since then, the LA Galaxy forward has regained his shape and has become the best Mexican active striker.

When asked about the players that could have an opportunity for the summer games, Martino said that “Chicharito” has been performing well, opening the door for his return to El Tri, at least for the friendly games, something that didn’t sit well with Rogelio Funes Mori, who will be the sacrificed player to open a spot in the roster.

According to reports from W Deportes, Andrés Guardado is another player that won’t play with El Tri if Hernández returns, as he refuses to play with him after “Chicharito” took advantage of his absence in one of El Tri camps to ask his teammates to name him El Tri’s captain. Alongside Guardado, Héctor Herrera will also step down to back up Guardado’s decision.

What comes for El Tri next?

El Tri will face Nigeria on May 28, as well as Uruguay on June 2 and Ecuador on June 5, game that will serve to the Aztec squad to improve their performance, as there are still a lot of problems that Gerardo “Tata” Martino needs to solve if he wants to have a competitive team in the World Cup. The last friendly game will be against Paraguay, on August 31.
