A thing that has become more common in recent years is the battle between USMNT and Mexico National Team to convince the young talents that have both citizenships to play for them instead of their neighbor.

Gerardo Martino finally reveals why he doesn't call up Javier Hernández

Although at first it was something that players that didn’t have a chance to playing for El Tri opted to represent the Stars and Stripes, in the past few years, given the growth of MLS and their academy teams, the Aztec squad has also started convincing young players as soon as they show their talent.

That has led to have players like Julian Araujo, who was part of the US Soccer academy teams since the U-16 and he even debuted on a friendly match for the American squad, to decide to play for Mexico thanks to their heritage.

But El Tri has also lost played talented players to their neighbors to the north, just like it happened with Ricardo Pepi, who even at 19 is a regular in Gregg Berhalter’s lineup, or Richard Ledezma, who decided to play for USMNT back in 2020, although he’s been erased from the roster ever since.

Ledezma is still an option for Mexico National Team

Since his debut with USMNT in October of 2020 on a friendly game against Panama that the Americans won 6-2, where he substituted Gio Reyna and played 22 minutes, Gregg Berhalter hasn’t called Richie Ledezma again.

Now that Mexico National Team needs a generational change, Gerardo “Tata” Martino could convince Ledezma to play for El Tri, especially since the Aztec squad is going to play several friendly games where he will try out different players to finish building his squad.

If Ledezma agrees to represent Mexico, given the talent he has and his potential, he’ll be the perfect replacement for Andrés Guardado, and if he manages to impress Martino and his coaching staff, he could even take his place for Qatar 2022.

Ledezma’s numbers with PSV

The 21-year-old offensive midfielder joined PSV Eindhoven U-19 squad in 2019 out of Real Salt Lake academy when his contract ended. Since then, he´s played for the U-19 and U-21 teams, but he already debuted with the first team, where he’s played 8 games this season.
